APES LOCATION AND INFORMATION

       

Natal is on the east coast of South Africa. Pietermaritzburg, the capital, is 90 kms inland. Durban is the principal administration centre. A.P.E.S. is situated in the Greytown area, know as Umvoti, in the Natal Midlands area. This is 200 kms west of Durban, It is subtropical and has a wide variety of birds and mammals, including silver backed jackal, duiker, bush buck, vervet and Samango monkeys, mongoose (both water and banded,) monitor lizards and many more. Summer averages at 29 degrees Celsius, and winter averages at 15 degrees.

Beaches:  140kms from A.P.E.S. Nearest is Stanger on the North Coastal belt.
Nearest town: Greytown, 14kms includes hospital, doctors, dentists,  
Police, banks, post office, full shopping facilities hotel, restaurants,
 Sport facilities; include golf, hiking, horse riding, 4x4 trails, boating, canoeing and polo-cross etc.

Harbour: Durban, Richardsbay (North Coast) deep sea fishing, sailing, bay trips, etc.

Nature Reserves: Crocodile Farm Muden 43 kms various nature reserves in close proximity of Kobotho nature reserve (APES), Big 5 can be seen at Hluhluwe Nature Reserve +- 300kms north, Snake park and venom collection, Port Shepstone 350 kms south.

Game Farms/Bush Camps/Back-Packing: On site Local area

Points of interest:Sangoma (traditional African Witch doctor/Herbalist) on site, African Arts & Crafts Greytown .Southern Drakensburg 150 kms.  

Activities: Rock climbing, mountaineering, abseiling, white water rafting (in wet season) Canoeing, boating, Bowls, squash, tennis, forest walks, dam fishing,
